Renting vs Buying a Stairlift: Which Is Right for You?

It's one of the first questions people ask when they start looking into stairlifts: should I rent or buy? There's no single right answer — it depends on your situation, your budget, and how long you're likely to need the lift. Here's an honest breakdown from our perspective as a family-run rental service.

Renting a stairlift has become increasingly popular, and for good reason. Here's why it works well for most people:

Buying a new stairlift typically costs between £2,500 and £5,000 depending on the model and your staircase. A reconditioned model might be £1,500–£2,500. Either way, it's a significant outlay.

With our rental service, you pay £350 to get started (which covers installation and the first month) and then £39 per month thereafter. For many families, that's a much more manageable commitment.

When you rent from us, the monthly fee covers:

• All servicing and maintenance
• Any repairs that are needed
• Replacement parts
• Removal when you no longer need it

If something goes wrong, you call us and we fix it — no additional charge. When you own a stairlift, repair costs come out of your pocket.

Circumstances change. A stairlift might be needed after an operation, during a period of reduced mobility, or as a longer-term solution as someone gets older. With a rental, you're not locked in. When you no longer need the lift, we come and remove it — no fuss, no disposal costs.

Knowing that a professional team is responsible for keeping your lift in safe working order is genuinely reassuring — for the person using it and for their family.

Buying makes more sense in some situations. Here's when it might be the right choice:

If you're confident you'll need a stairlift for many years — say, ten years or more — the maths can eventually favour buying. At £39/month, rental costs £468 per year. Over ten years, that's £4,680 plus the initial £350. A purchased stairlift might cost less over that timeframe, though you'd need to factor in servicing costs.

Some people simply prefer to own the equipment in their home. That's a perfectly valid preference.
