How to Choose the Right Stairlift for Your Staircase

Not all stairlifts are the same — and not all staircases are the same either. At Stairlifts Wales, we specialise in straight stairlift rental for homes across South Wales. Whether that is right for you comes down to the shape and width of your stairs, plus how the lift will be used day to day.

This guide explains what a straight stairlift can suit. If your home needs a curved stairlift, we will be upfront about it and can refer you to a reputable independent local company that handles curved installations.

Straight Staircases

If your stairs go straight from bottom to top with no bends or landings, you have the simplest and most affordable option: a straight stairlift.

Straight stairlifts are:

  • Quicker to install (usually within a few hours)
  • Less expensive than curved models
  • Available from a wide range of manufacturers
  • Easy to remove if circumstances change

The rail is fitted directly to the stairs — not the wall — so there is no need for major building work. Most straight staircases can be fitted without any structural changes to your home.

Curved and Angled Staircases

If your staircase has a bend, a landing, or a spiral section, you will need a curved stairlift. These are custom-built to follow the exact shape of your staircase, which makes them more complex and more expensive.

Stairlifts Wales does not supply or rent curved stairlifts. We would rather give you clear advice than offer something that is not right for your home. If a curved lift is needed, we can refer you to a reputable independent company in the local area that specialises in curved installations.

Key things to know about curved stairlifts:

  • Each rail is made to measure for your specific staircase
  • Installation takes longer — typically a full day
  • They cost significantly more than straight models
  • Resale value is lower because the rail cannot be reused elsewhere

If you are considering renting rather than buying, curved stairlifts are less commonly available on a rental basis — so it is worth asking your provider early.

Narrow Staircases

Many older Welsh homes have narrower staircases than modern builds. The good news is that our straight stairlifts are designed to fold away when not in use — the seat, footrest, and armrests all fold flat against the wall, leaving enough room for other people to pass.

As a general guide, a staircase needs to be at least 28 inches (71cm) wide to accommodate a standard straight stairlift. If yours is narrower than this, or needs a specialist solution, we will explain the options and can refer you to an appropriate independent local provider where needed.

When we visit to assess your home, we will always measure carefully and let you know exactly what will work.

Weight Capacity

Our straight stairlift rental options have their own specifications and suitability requirements. During a free home assessment, we will check that a straight stairlift is safe and practical for the person using it and for the staircase itself.

When a Straight Stairlift Is Not the Right Fit

Some homes need a different solution — for example, a curved rail for a bend or landing, an outdoor stairlift, or a specialist perch or heavy-duty model. These are not services we provide. If your assessment shows that a straight rental stairlift is not suitable, we can refer you to a decent independent company in the local area that can advise on the right type of installation.

What to Ask Before You Decide

When you are comparing options, here are the questions worth asking:

  • Is my staircase completely straight? A straight rail needs a clear run from bottom to top, without bends or intermediate landings.
  • How wide are my stairs? We will check whether a straight stairlift can be fitted safely.
  • Will the lift be used by one person or several? We will discuss comfort, safety and day-to-day use.
  • Do I want to rent or buy? Our service focuses on straightforward rental for suitable straight staircases.
  • What if my stairs are curved or need a specialist lift? We can refer you to a reputable independent local company for the right advice.

We Will Always Assess Your Home First

At Stairlifts Wales, we never recommend a stairlift without visiting your home first. Every staircase is different, and we want to make sure a straight stairlift rental is genuinely the right solution for you.

Our assessments are free, with no obligation. We will measure your stairs, talk through your needs, and give you an honest recommendation. If your home needs a curved or specialist stairlift, we will say so and can refer you to a reputable independent company in the local area.
