Stairlift Weight Limit: What You Need to Know
Our reconditioned Brooks Acorn Slimline stairlifts have a safe working load of 127kg (20 stone). Here is what that means for you and how we check suitability at your free home assessment.
Stairlift Weight Limit: What You Need to Know
One of the most common questions we get asked is: "Will a stairlift take my weight?" It is a completely reasonable thing to ask, and we would rather give you a straight answer than leave you guessing.
The reconditioned Brooks Acorn Slimline stairlifts we rent out have a safe working load of 127kg (approximately 20 stone). If the person using the lift is within that limit, the stairlift is designed to carry them safely and comfortably up and down the stairs.
What Is a Safe Working Load?
A safe working load (SWL) is the maximum weight a piece of equipment is rated to carry under normal operating conditions. For a stairlift, this means the combined weight of the person sitting in the seat, including any clothing and items they may be carrying.
The 127kg figure for the Brooks Acorn Slimline is the manufacturer's rated limit for safe, reliable operation. It is not a rough guide — it is the specification the lift is built and tested to.
Why the Brooks Acorn Slimline?
We have chosen to work exclusively with reconditioned Brooks Acorn Slimline stairlifts because they are well-built, reliable, and widely used across the UK. They are a proven model with a strong track record in South Wales homes.
Every unit we rent out is fully reconditioned before installation. We check the motor, drive mechanism, safety sensors, seat, armrests, footrest, and charging system. If anything is not right, it does not go out.
What If Someone Is Close to the Limit?
If the person using the lift is close to 127kg, we will discuss this honestly during the free home assessment. We will not simply wave it through — we want to make sure the lift is genuinely safe and comfortable for the person using it every day.
In some cases, a heavier-duty stairlift may be more appropriate. These are specialist models with higher weight ratings, typically supplied and installed by companies that focus on that end of the market. If that is the right solution for you, we will say so and can point you towards a reputable independent provider in the local area.
What Happens at the Home Assessment?
When we visit your home, we will:
- Discuss the user's needs — including weight, mobility, and how the lift will be used day to day
- Measure the staircase — to confirm a straight stairlift can be fitted safely
- Check the condition of the stairs — the rail is fitted to the stairs, not the wall, so the staircase needs to be in reasonable condition
- Explain the rental terms — £350 to get started, then £39 per month, with all repairs and servicing included
There is no pressure and no obligation. If a straight stairlift rental is not the right fit for your home, we will tell you honestly and help you find the right alternative.
A Note on Comfort
Weight capacity is one thing — comfort is another. The Brooks Acorn Slimline has a well-padded seat and adjustable armrests, and the footrest folds flat when not in use. Most users find it comfortable for the short journey up and down the stairs.
If you have any concerns about fit or comfort — for example, if the user has limited mobility in their hips or knees — mention it when you call. We can talk through what to expect before we visit.
